How to Ship Documents From Ethiopia to the USA

Someone in Ethiopia can send your original papers to you abroad by EMS or by a private courier. Before anything is sealed, ask the office that wants the papers whether they must be authenticated first. Then scan every page, choose a carrier with tracking, and keep the waybill.

Step 1: Get the stamps before the papers leave

If a paper needs Ethiopian stamps, it is simplest to get them while the paper is still in Ethiopia. The Ethiopian Embassy in Washington, DC, for one, asks for the stamp of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) before it will authenticate a document from Ethiopia. Ask the office that will receive your paper what it needs.

Step 2: Scan every page before it is sealed

Ask whoever holds the papers to scan or photograph every page, front and back, stamps included. Keep the files. If the package is lost, the scans show what was in it, and they help you ask the office for a replacement.

Step 3: Choose a carrier

There are two kinds of carrier in Addis Ababa. One is EMS, run by Ethiopost, the national postal service. The others are private express couriers such as DHL and FedEx.

EMS (Ethiopost). Ethiopost's destination list still includes the United States. The UK and the UAE are on it too. Ethiopost says EMS has an estimated delivery time of five business days. It adds that the date depends on the postal service of the receiving country and any country in between. EMS packages can be tracked, and extra insurance is available. You cannot bring your own envelope: Ethiopost packs the item in its own standard packaging.

DHL. DHL lists many service points in Addis Ababa, run by local agents, and one in Adama. Its location data for Ethiopia has errors, so call the point before you go. We found no DHL price list for sending from Ethiopia. DHL gives quotes through its MyDHL+ site.

FedEx. FedEx names a service contractor in Addis Ababa, in Kazanchis, and lists stations at Bole Medhanealem. It lists none in Adama. Its Ethiopia site links to an online rate tool. We could not confirm that the tool quotes shipments from Ethiopia, so call the contractor for a price and a transit time.

We could not confirm UPS's agent on an official UPS page, so we leave it out here.

What sending costs

Ethiopost's online calculator is the only price check we could confirm for sending from Ethiopia. It gave these EMS charges on 30 September 2026:

The calculator does not say whether VAT is included. It also gave a charge of zero for some countries it lists, Germany among them. Treat these figures as a guide and confirm the price at the counter. Transit times are in Step 3.

We found no published DHL or FedEx prices or transit times for sending from Ethiopia. Ask for a quote before you ship. We found no official rule on whether you must pay in birr or in dollars.

If the package is lost or late

Read the carrier's terms before you send a paper you cannot replace. Where an air transport convention applies, DHL's global terms limit its liability under that convention. Otherwise the limit is the market or declared value, or about USD 30 per kilogram, whichever is lower. DHL may arrange full-value insurance if the sender asks in writing and pays for it. DHL is not liable for loss caused by delay. A claim must reach DHL in writing within 30 days of the day it accepted the package, so do not wait long on a late one.

A document envelope weighs little, so that limit pays very little. Keep the scans from Step 2 and the tracking number.

Things to check before you send

• Passports. We found no DHL rule on passports for Ethiopia. Ask the carrier before you send one.
• Customs. We found no published Ethiopian customs rule for sending personal documents out of the country. Ethiopost's list of banned items covers things like coins, bank notes and heritage items. It does not mention documents. The carrier tells you at the counter what form to fill in. The receiving country's customs may also open or hold a package.
• A power of attorney going the other way. Since 2 April 2026, the embassy in Washington handles powers of attorney and document authentication only through the Digital MoFA application. Our guide to power of attorney legalization covers that route.

Our timeline is 10 business days door-to-door. The clock starts on the day every paper is in our hands, and it pauses while we wait for you to choose a carrier and approve its charge. Days a package is held by customs, in Ethiopia or abroad, do not count. Nor do delays by the carrier or a foreign postal service after we hand the package over, because no carrier promises a delivery date.

Proof on closing: scan of the document, scan of the courier waybill with its tracking number, geotagged photo at the courier counter, tracking record showing the package delivered, with the date.

That fee is ours alone. The courier charge is separate, and is passed on at cost with the courier's receipt. We add nothing to it.

If you also need a certificate issued or stamped, that is a separate service with its own price. Nobody can make a courier or customs move faster, including us.

What we do not do

We are not a courier company. We pay the courier only the charge it quotes, plus any insurance you ask for, and we send you its receipt. We do not tell you what a foreign office will accept; ask that office.
